Operations is about making the trains run.  This includes operating passenger and freight trains, controlling the movement of trains within the rail network and managing and coordinating the safe operation of train movements.

Careers in Rail Operations include Train Drivers, Train Guards, Train or Network Controllers, Signallers, Shunters and Rolling Stock Maintenance Staff.

Train Drivers

A Train Driver prepares a train for travel, ensures its safe operation and drives trains to get passengers and freight to their destinations.

As the Rail Industry is constantly changing with new technology, new lines and trains the role of a Train Driver is varied and challenging. They are constantly upskilling, attending new courses to learn new technology, new rules and techniques.

Train Drivers usually enter a Trainee Program which includes on and off the job training, resulting in a nationally recognised qualification. Work conditions for Train Drivers are flexible with rotating rosters, allowing for weekend and weekday work.

There are many career opportunities for Train Drivers ranging from Driver Trainer, Network Controllers and Operations Managers.
