Telecommunications Engineering

Telecommunication Engineers are involved in the planning, designing, commissioning and monitoring complex telecommunications networks and associated broadcasting equipment.

A Telecommunication Engineer in the Rail Industry can be expected to be involved with and manage a whole range of communication technology projects with networks and systems. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) Systems
  • Older analogue systems
  • Long Line Digitised Voice Announcements (LLDVA)
  • Station Passenger Information
  • Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)
  • Wide Area Networks (WAN)
  • Mobile Radio which is used within train communications between the driver and the signaller
  • Given that Telecommunications is such an important aspect of the Railways there are many career opportunities including Communications Planning, Designing and Maintenance through to Construction and Project Management and Signalling.
