Environmental EngineeringEnvironmental Engineers are responsible for assessing the environmental impacts of the planning, design, organisation and supervision of the construction and operation of engineering projects which are related to rail operations. Working in the rail environment allows Environmental Engineers to be involved in a variety of tasks ranging from contaminated site assessments, heritage assessments of railway assets, stations and rollingstock and providing environmental advice and compliance assessment on 'green' initiatives. Environmental Engineers develop Environmental Impact Assessments to manage environmental risks during maintenance and construction projects of rail related activities to ensure that the environment is protected. This can range from day-to-day routine maintenance through to major works. Work conditions can vary and Environmental Engineers frequently work with other professionals which, at times will involve pooling together expertise for particular projects. Work can vary between the office and outdoor work when involved in construction projects. As the community becomes more environmentally conscious there are increased career opportunities for Environmental Engineers within the Australian Rail Industry.
