Civil Engineering

Working in the rail environment offers Civil Engineers the opportunity to investigate, plan, design, construct and maintain much of the physical infrastructure of our railway tracks and support structures such as bridges, tunnels, earthworks and drainage.

Civil Engineers may perform the following tasks

  • Investigate sites to work out the most suitable foundation for a proposed structure
  • Design and construct new tracks and bridges
  • Manage the maintenance, upgrading and construction of tracks, bridges, and other railway structures
  • Supervise civil contract works

A Civil Engineer may choose to either specialise as a Chief Civil Engineer or career opportunities in the following

  • Track and Civil Design
  • Track and Structures Maintenance
  • Civil Construction Management
  • Technical Standards
  • Project Management
